Amazon turns 25... All the memories from 1994 to now...
I can't believe that Amazon is 25 years old! As some would call it, "The Everything Store" started in 1994 in a garage in Seattle, Washington, originally selling just books, but transformed into the MEGAGIANT we know today. Here are some important things that happened along the line from 1994 to now for the company.
July 5, 1994: The company is started as Cadabra, Inc. in Seattle, Washington.
1994-95: The company's name is forced to change to Amazon after one of the lawyers misheard the name as Cadaver (a dead body! 😝😝😝) The reason behind the new name: It starts with A, so it would be at the top of search engine results, and it represents something big! (the Amazon rainforest)
July 1995: The company begins business as an online bookstore.
By Fall 1995, the company operated in all 50 U.S. states and over 45 countries! By this time, they were also making $20,000 per week!
1996: The company is reincorporated in Delaware.
May 15, 1997: The company becomes public on the NASDAQ as AMZN, starting off at $18/share. (The stock is almost $2000/share as of July 5, 2019!)
June 19, 2000: The company's logo becomes the one we know today with the smile arrow from the A to the Z, representing that they carry everything from A to Z!
February 2005: Amazon launches Amazon Prime.
August 2007: Amazon launches AmazonFresh, a grocery service offering perishable and nonperishable foods.
September 25, 2007: Amazon launches Amazon Music.
November 19, 2007: Amazon launches the Amazon Kindle.
July 2010: E-book sales of the Amazon Kindle surpass that of physical book sales.
August 25, 2014: Amazon acquires Twitch.tv, a video game streaming website.
November 6, 2014 to 2015: Amazon announces the Amazon Echo on November 6, 2014, a smart speaker that is then unveiled throughout 2015.
November 2, 2015: Amazon opens its first physical store, Amazon Books, in Seattle, Washington.
December 7, 2016: Amazon makes its first drone delivery with Amazon Prime Air in Cambridge, U.K.
June 15, 2017: Amazon announces that it will acquire Whole Foods; the deal is then approved on August 23, 2017.
2017-2019: HQ2
In September 2017, Amazon announced it would build a second headquarters in a city with over a million people, the project was called HQ2.
January 22, 2018: The first Amazon Go store opens in Seattle, Washington.
November 2018: Amazon announces it will open its HQ2 project in Long Island, New York City, Queens, and Crystal City, VA.
February 14, 2019: Amazon withdraws from its Queens HQ2 opening.
2019: Amazon wins the .amazon domain ending, which ended a fight between the South American countries who wanted the domain ending to preserve Amazon heritage and Amazon who wanted the domain name. Unfortunately, it was announced that only one company could own a domain ending, so South American countries couldn't use domains such as savethe.amazon to preserve Amazon heritage, while Amazon used buyfrom.amazon to advertise their company, that wouldn't work.
It has been a very long 25 years for Amazon. And so, congrats on 25 years, Amazon!
