ONE MONTH AFTER: NECCO
Today is Aug 27, 2018. It has been ONE MONTH without NECCO! Anybody know NECCO wafers? You probably do. They started in 1847, after a guy decided to make lozenges without medicine inside. These eventually became NECCO wafers. They became known as NECCO wafers by 1912.
So, NECCO, or the New England Confectionery Company, was created in 1901 from the merger of 3 candy companies. The company became known for its NECCO wafers, and did you know this: You know those little heart shaped candies you eat around Valentine's Day? Those were made by NECCO. But don't worry. NECCO may be gone, but Brach's makes practically the same thing! So don't worry, Valentine's, Brach's is here to help you crave that Valentine's sweet tooth.
Now how did NECCO fail? Of course, many businesses have fallen in 2018. Thanks to Amazon. But this is a candy company, not a retailer. Here are a list of business that fell, got close to falling, and possibly fail in the near future:
Businesses that did fail:
Sears Canada
Toys R Us and Babies R Us
NECCO
Businesses that almost failed:
Claire's
Businesses that will likely fail in the near future:
Rite Aid
Sears and Kmart
That's 6 businesses!
So 2018 has been a tough year for business, because of Amazon and Walmart. In fact, right at the beginning of 2018, Jeff Bezos(Owner of Amazon) became the first person in the world to surpass $100 BILLION, and this way became the richest person in the whole world! Bill Gates(Owner of Microsoft) is currently at $95 billion, and Jeff Bezos about $154 billion!
Okay, ENOUGH CHITCHAT. Now HOW did NECCO fail???
In 2018, NECCO disappeared from the world. But how?
From April to May, many videos were made saying that the company may not survive. In May, it was bought by Round Hill Investments. Then in July, came its fall when it was sold to an unknown "national candy manufacturer," and so on July 24, 2018, the factory was abruptly shut down, and all 230 workers were told to go to the factory and collect their final paychecks on Friday, July 27, 2018. And so a 117 year old company, died. RIP NECCO 1901-2018. Yet another company to die in 2018.
Here is a picture of Brach's Sweethearts. See, the same thing, if not better than, NECCO Sweethearts. So Sweethearts are definitely not dead.
