Fall Foliage With TR27: Preseason 6

Preseason (Update) 6

Back To School & Fall Colors & Weather

08.27-08.29.25 (published 08.30.25)

This last week of August has felt a lot less like summer, especially with nights being as cold as they have been. We haven't even made it to Labor Day (09.01.25) yet but the weather has gotten to a point where it is pushing the limits of being able to keep summer attractions open, not during the day (except for 08.20.25), but at night.

For the dates from 08.27-08.29.25, here's what the recorded highs and lows have been:

08.27.25: Low of 46.2°F/7.9°C (morning of 08.27), high of 76.6°F/24.8°C

08.28.25: Low of 42.3°F/5.7°C (morning of 08.28), high of 78.8°F/26°C

08.29.25: Low of 53.6°F/12°C (morning of 08.29), high of 75.6°F/24.2°C (some data missing, but it definitely seems to have been around this range)

For keeping summer attractions open, highs of 77 (25°C), 79 (26.1°C), and 76 (24.4°C) are definitely sufficient and normal for the last week of their usual operational season and are very comfortable temps. What is NOT comfortable is the lows at night in which these attractions operate. I know we're at the end of summer, but these lows at night scream October, NOT August, and when water parks are still running, a low of 42 (5.6°C) is cutting it WAY too close for a time of year where we don't usually have to worry about infrastructure like that freezing until Columbus Day weekend at the earliest. We're having average late August highs, but the lows are straight out of peak harvest season!

For late August, highs should be in the upper 70s and lows should be in the upper 50s in my area. The highs have been normal, but the lows have been WAY lower than normal. Mid 40s is already insane for this time of year, but LOW 40s?! We were only about 10 degrees away from water freezing, and that is something that shouldn't happen until after the equinox! In higher elevations in Western MA, on the morning of 08.28.25, it was only in the 30s, FLIRTING WITH FREEZING!

As it is now only 2 days away before I officially start documenting the fall 2025 weather (meteorologically Sep 1-Nov 30, but I'll probably go until the end of 2025), these temp swings are getting to be a wild rollercoaster that is the swinging from summer to fall and vice versa.

For the next 2 weeks, here's what the expected weather is going to be:

(Convert to Celsius by taking the given number, subtracting it by 32 and then dividing that result by 1.8; 50°F = ((50-32)/1.8)°C = (18/1.8)°C = 10°C)

8/30: Official high of at least, well, we don't actually know (Westover AFB is down right now and it has been since 7PM yesterday! 😬, but likely mid-70s, for the PWS I usually trust in Easthampton, MA via Weather Underground, it read a high of at least 74.1°F/23.4°C today, likely the max high since temps are already going down), but the expected low is expected to be 46. Keep in mind that the average low for this time of year is around 57-58, so we've been consistently going 10+ degrees BELOW that! 🥶

8/31: ☀️ 78/50
9/1: 🌥️ 79/49 *official start of 2025 meteorological fall and my 2025 documentation season of Fall Foliage With TR27
9/2: 🌤️ 80/50
9/3: 🌤️ 81/54
9/4: ⛅ 78/60
9/5: ⛈️ 76/56 (44%)
9/6: 🌤️ 77/50
9/7: 🌤️ 74/47
9/8: ⛅ 74/47
9/9: ⛅ 76/50
9/10: 🌫️ (fog) 76/50
9/11: ⛅ 75/51
9/12: ⛅ 76/52
9/13: ⛅ 75/50

As you can see, the rest of the forecast shows continued warmth during the day but continued chill at night, with the only real exceptions being a low of 60 on 9/4-9/5 and a low of 56 on 9/5-9/6. (considering thunderstorms are in the forecast, it could be feel a bit more like summer these 2 days, especially 9/5) With the fact that in AUGUST we've had several nights with lows in the 40s (and even close to the 30s in my area!), I must note that we shouldn't start having 40s as lows until the equinox at the absolute earliest, and that these nights are COLD for this time of year! And also, only ONE day of rain in a 14 day forecast is NOT a good ratio and some of our area is re-entering drought status now! 😬🏜️

Summer during the day, deep fall at night appears to be the pattern going into the 1st half of September, though I DID see a report that the 2nd half of September would bring back the heat... Stay tuned!

This may or may not be the last preseason update. Happy Labor Day weekend!

Oh wait, I forgot the foliage pics, taken Aug 27-29. Here they are!

On August 27, I went on a riverboat cruise and I really enjoyed myself. I used this as an opportunity to see if the Connecticut River landscape was starting to look like fall and I must say it was, but in VERY early stages!

It's starting to look less green... Chlorophyll's shutting down!

Especially over here!

It still solidly looks like summer throughout most of the river, but we are on September's edge and thus the arrival of fall colors!

Definitely starting here!

That tree's in fall mode for sure!

This foliage is as well!

Spots of fall color showing up!

Going down the mountain still looks like summer, but for how much longer?

In my area, it's definitely getting started!

Northampton, MA is starting to show fall colors as well, but this tree only, for now...

Easthampton, MA's Ferry Street area is starting to look a little fall-ish!

The abandoned mills on the One Ferry Project site as of August 29, 2025. Supposedly, work on redevelopment will begin again by October 2025 from a source I contacted!

And over here in a year or two will rise a 5-story residential block, 11 Ferry Street! Once 7 & 11 Ferry are done, the only building left is 9 Ferry, that small one!

Now that I got this out of the way, I can properly post this now! See you soon!
